She lives above, and has access to, a bookstore that hardly ever opens. She’s “the kind of girl you notice” and often gets tipsy over whiskeys or a few Tom Collinses. Almost every sentence out of her mouth is part of an elaborate, enigmatic lie. She’s a woman who seeks out our protagonist, Toru Watanabe — an introverted, deeply scarred lit major — and plays the brazen romance shark to his wet fish. She teases Watanabe, asking repeatedly when he’ll take her to a porno theater. By the time we find out that Midori’s father isn’t visiting Brazil, as she insisted, but is dying a slow death in a nearby hospital, we are a little bit in love with her. When we see the deep sadness that has caused her outward-striking behavior, she’s even more of a complex joy.

Continued.

He’s not exceptionally bright or talented, but we can get...

He’s not exceptionally bright or talented, but we can get behind a lot of the things that Garfield supports.
